Kate’s Top 5 Ballets

Petite Mort
by Jiri Kylian

This contemporary ballet is sensual, tender, provocative and funny. It moves me more every time I see it.

Cacti
by Alexander Ekman

I laughed out loud when I saw this ballet for the first time, and nearly jumped out of my seat in response to the methodical, pounding percussion created by the dancers onstage.

Don Quixote
by Rudolph Nureyev

My favorite classical ballet. The bravado, the bluster, the music, the passion and showmanship – you can’t help but love it.

Etudes
by Harald Lander

Etudes is like a ballet class on steroids. There is nowhere for the dancers to hide. I had anxiety watching Boston Ballet perform this as it lays bare the ability of the group performing it, but they rose to the occasion beautifully and left me speechless.

Chroma
by Wayne McGregor

I would start every day watching a performance of Chroma if I could. This ballet pushes its dancers to the extreme physically. It’s nonstop kinetics and the ultimate adrenaline rush. I actually went into labor with my first child while watching this ballet, and like to think that he knew how incredible it was and wanted to check it out for himself.
